How to choose a glass cleaner mop: a South African checklist

Howzit! Not every glass cleaner mop suits every window. A long squeegee that is perfect for a sliding door is overkill for a bathroom mirror. Use this checklist before you add anything to your cart.

Start with the glass you actually have

Count your windows and note the type. Aluminium sliding frames, big stacking doors, shower screens and car windscreens all clean differently. Measure the biggest pane you need to reach, and check whether it is single or double glazed, because that decides if a magnetic cleaner is even an option.

Squeegee, spray mop, magnetic or electric?

A squeegee with an extendable pole is best for big panes and height. A spray mop is the easy all-rounder for mirrors, glass doors and shower screens. Magnetic cleaners suit glass you cannot reach from both sides. Cordless window vacuums keep sills dry and suit shower screens and lots of glass, but they cost more and depend on a charged battery.

Reach, blade and pad quality

Look at the extended pole length, the locking mechanism and what the blade or pad is made of. Soft rubber blades and washable microfibre pads give the best finish, and spare heads are a big plus. A wobbly joint is the first thing reviewers complain about.

Reading the AliExpress listing

Read the most recent reviews, not just the star rating. Look for photos from buyers, comments about leaks or broken handles, and the seller rating. If a spec is not in the listing, treat it as unknown.

Streak-free technique

Dust the frame first, wash with a little soapy water or glass spray, wipe in straight lines and finish the edges with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid cleaning in direct midday sun, because the cleaner dries too fast and leaves streaks.
